Today's News: "Wholesome Goodness!"
Wow. That's the only word I can use to describe it; Wow!

An ad in our local newspaper from our largest local grocery store said this little ditty: "Bring home fresh taste Wholesome at Home sandwiches. More value for the way you live."

Really?
Unreally.
This is an example of the newest problem with trying to find better food choices: obvious misinformation built like they have your best interests, and health, in mind.
So let's explore their story in-depth;

1.   Those sandwiches, they call them "Wholesome at Home"  ( then they have a little smiley face next to it to make "extra-friendly.")
Just how "wholesome" are those sandwiches?
The cold-cuts: typical label on ham type cold cuts reads like this:
       (on a per serving basis)
         Calories: 220 from fats: 104
Total Fats: 11 grams percentage of RDA: 18%
              saturated: 20%
         Cholesterol: 26% RDA
Sodium: 1760mg or 73% of your RDA; Recommended Daily Allowance.
   Ingredients:
Chopped processed ham and pork products
Water, salt, sodium phosphate, sugar, dextrose, monosodium glutamate, sodium erythorbate, hydrolyzed soy protein, sodium nitrite, sodium nitrate.

Now: what on that list sounds "wholesome" to you? Not a single thing. It's not really even food. You, your body, your children's bodies, their mind/brain, nervous system, immune systems: not one single part of "wholesome" is fulfilled with that product. And we didn't even get to the "bread."

Being the poor harried parents/workers you are the "way you live" that they note in the ad would never allow for anything other than convenience foods, right? I mean there is nothing more important than soccer, or gymnastics or whatever right?

How do they get away with that obvious misinformation?
Because you let them.
Simple as that.

What would we suggest IS "wholesome?" And fast enough for lunches or dinners that need to be fast?
Slice up a few red peppers, a tomato with the seeds squeezed out of it, an onion, chop up some greens like broccoli raab, mince a few cloves of garlic and add all to frying pan with olive oil and ancho chili powder and turmeric. Cover, cook on medium heat for 8 minutes and heat up pita bread in oven at the same time. Total time to food: 12 minutes.

Now, that is really wholesome. And nutritious. And kid friendly. And delicious. That will build strong minds and bodies. And it was fast fast fast.
